NRI Tax Slabs for Financial Year 2024-25 and 2025-26: Everything You Need to Know
By VCAREFIRST | Simplifying NRI Compliance
As an NRI (Non-Resident Indian), staying compliant with Indian tax laws is crucial. Whether you’re receiving income from India or abroad, understanding the NRI tax slabs for the financial years 2024-25 is essential to avoid penalties and ensure that you pay taxes correctly. In this blog, we’ll cover the NRI tax slabs, important dates, dos and don’ts, and provide a step-by-step guide on how to file your tax returns effectively.
1. NRI Tax Slabs for Financial Year 2024-25
The tax slabs for NRIs in India follow the same structure as for Indian residents, with the exception of a few key factors based on your residential status. For the financial years 2024-25, the tax rates for NRIs are as follows:
OLD TAX REGIME NEW TAX REGIME
Tax Slabs for Individuals Tax Slabs for Individuals
Income Range Tax Rate Income Range Tax Rate
Up to ₹2.5 lakh No Tax Up to ₹3 lakh No Tax
₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh 5% ₹3 lakh to ₹7 lakh 5%
₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh 20% ₹7 lakh to ₹10 lakh 10%
Above ₹10 lakh 30% ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh 15%
₹12 lakh to ₹15 lakh 20%
Above ₹15 lakh 30%
2. NRI Taxation Rules: Special Considerations
a. Income in India:
NRIs are taxed in India on income earned in India, including rental income, dividends, interest from Indian banks, or income from the sale of property.
b. Foreign Income:
If you’re an NRI earning income abroad, it will not be taxed in India unless you bring the money back to India. NRIs are only taxed on the income generated within India.
c. Tax Deducted at Source (TDS):
India applies TDS on various types of income, such as interest earned from NRO accounts, rental income, and capital gains. TDS is deducted at the source, and NRIs can claim refunds if excess tax has been deducted.

3. Important Dates for NRIs: Filing Taxes for FY 2024-25
For NRIs, it’s important to track the crucial dates to avoid late fees and penalties:
a. Income Tax Return (ITR) Filing Deadlines:
For FY 2024-25:
- Due Date for Filing ITR: 31st July 2025 (for individuals not requiring audit)
- Revised Due Date: 31st December 2025 (if an extension is given)
b. Other Important Dates:
- Tax Payment Due Date: Make sure to pay the tax before the due date to avoid penalties and interest.
- Tax Audit Deadline: 30th September 2025 for FY 2024-25
4. Do’s and Don’ts for NRIs Regarding Tax Filing
Do’s:
- File Your Tax Returns on Time: Always file your returns on or before the deadline to avoid penalties.
- Update Your PAN: Ensure your PAN is updated with your NRI status.
- Claim Deductions: If you’re eligible, claim deductions under Section 80C for investments like life insurance and EPF.
- Declare All Income: Be transparent about your income, whether it is from Indian or foreign sources.
Don’ts:
- Don’t Use Your Resident PAN: If you were a resident earlier, update your PAN status to NRI status once you become an NRI.
- Don’t Ignore TDS: Avoid ignoring the tax deduction at source for incomes like interest and rental income.
- Don’t File Under Wrong Status: Ensure that your tax filing status is NRI and not a resident if you qualify as an NRI.
- Don’t Miss the Due Dates: Late filing could result in penalties or interest.
5. How to File Taxes as an NRI
- Step 1: Gather all necessary documents such as Form 16A (for TDS), bank statements, and proof of foreign income.
- Step 2: Use the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal to submit your Income Tax Return.
- Step 3: Ensure that you select the correct ITR form based on your income and status ( ITR-2, ITR-3 etc.).
- Step 4: If you have income from India, make sure to declare it and pay the tax as per the NRI tax slabs.
6. Key Benefits of Filing Taxes on Time for NRIs
- Claim Refunds: If you’ve paid excess TDS, filing returns ensures you get a refund.
- Avoid Penalties: Filing your returns on time helps you avoid unnecessary penalties.
- Maintain Compliance: Filing returns ensures that you stay compliant with Indian tax laws and avoid issues during future visits to India.
