NRI Guide to PAN, Aadhaar & Bank Accounts: What You Need and How to Get It.
By VCAREFIRST | Simplifying NRI Compliance
Living abroad doesn’t disconnect you from India—especially when it comes to banking, tax, and government documentation. But many NRIs are confused about:
Do I need a PAN card?
Should I update my Aadhaar?
Which bank account should I use in India?
Let’s break it all down into simple steps so you can stay compliant and stress-free.
🧾 1. Do NRIs Need a PAN Card?
- Yes, in most cases. A PAN (Permanent Account Number) is mandatory for NRIs if they:
- Have taxable income in India (e.g. rent, capital gains)
- Invest in stocks or mutual funds
- Open a demat account
- Buy or sell property in India
- Want to file an income tax return
📝 How to Apply for PAN as an NRI:
- Visit the NSDL or UTIITSL website
- Choose Form 49A for NRIs or Form 49AA for foreign nationals
- Submit:
- Passport copy (attested)
- Overseas address proof (bank statement or utility bill)
- Mention your foreign address clearly
- Opt for a physical PAN card or e-PAN
🔒 Tip: Don’t use your old resident PAN after becoming an NRI. Update it with your NRI status.
🆔 2. Is Aadhaar Mandatory for NRIs?
- No, it’s not mandatory—but in some cases, it can be useful.
- Aadhaar Rules for NRIs:
- As of the Aadhaar (Amendment) Act, 2019, NRIs with Indian passports are eligible to apply for Aadhaar voluntarily.
- You must be physically present in India for the biometric process.
- Aadhaar is NOT mandatory for:
- Filing taxes (PAN suffices)
- Opening NRI bank accounts
- Property registration
- ⚠️ Don’t use Aadhaar if you’re a foreign citizen (OCI/PIO)—it’s only for Indian citizens.

🏦 3. NRI Bank Accounts: Which One Should You Open?
You cannot legally operate a standard resident savings account once you become an NRI. You must convert it or open a new account under RBI-compliant NRI account types.
🏁 Account Types for NRIs:
Account Type Use Repatriable? Tax Status
NRE Account Deposit foreign income ✅ Yes Tax-free
NRO Account Manage income earned in India (rent, dividends, etc.) ❌ Limited Taxable in India
FCNR Account Fixed deposits in foreign currency ✅ Yes Tax-free
🔁 What to Do If You Have a Resident Account:
Inform your bank you’re now an NRI
Request conversion to NRO or NRE
Provide:
- Passport copy
- Visa/work permit
- PAN Card or Form 60 (if PAN is not available)
- Overseas address proof
- Indian Address Proof
🛑 Using a resident account as an NRI is a FEMA violation. It can lead to penalties.
🚨 Common Mistakes NRIs Should Avoid
